Japanese Word of the Week: Tall

TALL

Being able to describe yourself, other people or objects in the environment is very helpful.

The Japanese word for tall is Takai.

To pronounce this correctly, let’s first break it down into syllables:

Ta-kai.

As you can see, you have two separate sounds.

The first sound, “ta” is pronounced like the “to” in the English word tot.

The second sound, “kai”, is pronounced like the “ki” in the English word kite.

Bonus: The word “takai” not only means tall, it also means expensive. So you get two words in one!

Now put the sounds together. Keep repeating the word until you get more comfortable with it. Before you know it, you’ll have it!
