BOOKSTORE
While e-books have taken over in most places, Japan is still in favor of the paper versions. Because of this, there are many bookstores, with everything from large chains to small mom-and-pop book shops. Jimbocho in Tokyo is well-known for its many bookstores and specialty book shops.
The Japanese word for bookstore is Hon-ya.
To pronounce this correctly, let’s first break it down into syllables:
Hon-ya.
As you can see, you have two separate sounds.
The first sound, “hon” is pronounced similar to the English word hone.
The second sound, “ya”, is pronounced like the “ya” in the English word yacht.
Now put the sounds together. Keep repeating the word until you get more comfortable with it. Before you know it, you’ll have it!
HON-YA
