As in many other countries, the Japanese adore their pets. So being able talk about yours can be a great conversation starter, and can help you find common ground even when you don’t know to speak much Japanese.
The Japanese word for dog is Inu.
To pronounce this correctly, let’s first break it down into syllables:
I-nu.
As you can see, you have two separate sounds.
The first sound, “I” is pronounced like the “ee” in the English word bee.
The second sound, “nu”, is pronounced like the “noo” in the English word noose.
With this word, the accent falls on the second syllable.
Now put the sounds together and emphasize the second syllable. Keep repeating the word until you get more comfortable with it. Before you know it, you’ll have it!
